  16.      The following is taken from the "NO ALTERNATIVE" CD liner:

  19.      "This is NOT an alternative rock collection. "Alternative" rock DOES NOT
  20. exist. It is a MYTH on par with Elvis sightings, QUALITY airline food and 
  21. STRESS-free relationships. No, what you're listening to is SIMPLY nineteen
  22. songs. It is OUR BELIEF, however, that these songs SIMULTANEOUSLY create
  23. one BEAUTIFUL clamor and SERVE as a soundtrack to this suspended moment
  24. in TIME. As an oft-labeled, SELDOM understood GENERATION, we have NO
  25. better VOICE than a COMMUNITY of bands, MANY of whom you'll FIND on THIS
  26. record. It is THE BANDS making up NO ALTERNATIVE - ALONG with dozens of
  27. OTHERS, WHETHER they're reinvigorating ROCK and ROLL or HELPING to
  28. TRANSCEND musical AND cultural BOUNDARIES - who have helped AWAKEN the
  29. WORLD to the FACT that music NOT only HAS the POWER to SPEAK TO a
  30. GENERATION but FOR a GENERATION. When FIRST listening to this album it may
  31. NOT be IMMEDIATELY APPARENT HOW the poetry of ONE track CORRESPONDS
  32. with the NODS to the PAST in the NEXT or WHY ONE band's whispers are
  33. INTRICATELY LINKED to ANOTHER group's SCREAMS.
  34.      Closer inspection will REVEAL the COMMON thread that BINDS them all
  35. TOGETHER: INTEGRITY. That bands contributing to NO ALTERNATIVE cannot be
  36. neatly nestled BENEATH one blanket STATEMENT. They do, HOWEVER, SHARE an
  37. EMOTIONAL COMMITMENT and FOCUS that RINGS TRUE from this collection's
  38. OPENING note to its FINAL chord. What YOU are HEARING is the SOUND of
  39. these reaffirming their DEDICATION not JUST to a musical CULTURE but to a
  40. WORLD COMMUNITY that has been devastated by AIDS. In the past, the groups
  41. BEFORE you were THROWN TOGETHER UNDER the roof of "alternative" rock and
  42. THEN ghettoized SOMEWHERE LEFT of a radio dial rendered IMMOVABLE with
  43. rigor mortis. TODAY the dial has LOOSENED. WE must LEARN that LABELLING
  44. music creates BORDERS and these borders create factions. DON'T categorize.
  45. JUST LISTEN. This is the music of YOUR life; in your life; about your LIFE.
  46. This is NOT alternative rock. It's NO ALTERNATIVE. It's not us VERSUS them.
  47. It's JUST us. And this is the way WE sound.

  51.      HERE comes the HARD PART. We've brought these bands TOGETHER.
  52. They've made GREAT music. YOU'VE spent SOME HARD-earned cash, a
  53. SIGNIFICANT percentage of which WILL go toward FIGHTING AIDS through
  54. primary care and prevention EDUCATION. Now YOU HAVE to THINK about YOUR
  55. SENSE of RESPONSIBILITY and your ROLE in the FACE of an unprecedented
  56. HEALTH CRISIS that, whether you KNOW it or NOT, has CHANGED the way WE
  57. ALL live our LIVES. Perhaps the MOST CRITICAL THING to REMEMBER about
  58. this mysterious AND miserable disease IS THAT there are a few SIMPLE things
  59. you CAN do to PREVENT YOURSELF from GETTING infected (or infecting
  60. others): practice SAFER SEX and DON'T share needles. What IS safer sex? The
  61. MOST BASIC thing to REMEMBER is that wearing a NEW latex condom EVERY
  62. time YOU have vaginal OR anal INTERCOURSE is the MOST RELIABLE means of
  63. STOPPING the SPREAD of HIV, a virus WHICH is BELIEVED to CAUSE the
  64. VARIETY of human immune system DISORDERS called AIDS. BEYOND practicing
  65. SAFER SEX and NOT SHARING needles, the MOST IMPORTANT thing to
  66. REMEMBER about AIDS IS that PREJUDICE and MISUNDERSTANDING have
  67. TRANSFORMED this medical EMERGENCY into a SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CRISIS.
  68. THE EPIDEMIC of INTOLERANCE surrounding AIDS has made an ALREADY
  69. horrible SITUATION WORSE and CAUSED hundreds or THOUSANDS OF people
  70. around the WORLD to SUFFER needlessly AND SOMETIMES DIE. AIDS WILL NOT
  71. just GO away and WE have NO CHOICE but to LEARN to DEAD with IT,
  72. RESPONSIBLY, HONESTLY and compassionately. That's the HARD PART...AND
  73. there's NO ALTERNATIVE.
